What is a success coach?
A success coach is your mentor, your support and your friend for the duration of your course. We are course experts who have a wealth of experience in our field and will share this with you to ensure you have a supportive and engaging study experience and are ready for the big world upon graduation.
What do you love most about coaching?
I love helping others. Studying isn’t easy, I have studied a bachelor degree and recently returned to do more studies. Juggling and balancing life inside and outside of University can be challenging, I love working with students and having that “ah ha!” moment when they realize that they can do this.
Why do you think a success coach is valuable?
It’s important because we have walked in your shoes, we have been through the traps throughout our lives since we have graduated, we know what to expect and know how to overcome tricky situations. We care! We thrive on seeing others achieve their dreams. We work with you from day one to graduation and have the proud moment of seeing you walk across the stage at your graduation! The first day of your new venture. With our skills, knowledge, and network contacts, we’ve got the goods to help you achieve your goals.
Could you tell us about a student you coached and how you helped them grow and succeed?
An international student came to see me concerned about her worries between life external to school and how that was impacting her studies. She was quite distressed, she had previously had good grades but saw a decline in her grades during a period of personal situations arising, it seemed like as soon as one situation had been managed, another one would soon pop up. She reached her limit and came to see me to learn more about the support options available through the school.
We discussed the option of attending our campus counsellor which she was interested in, and I also suggested she take her Gallup strengths survey and we would work through her top 5 strengths in relation to both life and university. We spent about 3 sessions together, suggesting a tool to use and strategies to implement to help her find time to study and complete assessments whilst juggling her personal life. She returned about a month later with tears in her eyes. She thanked me as she now felt she had a better understanding of herself. She felt like she was better able to manage situations which had previously challenged her and felt in control of her work/life balance.
We soon saw an increase in her marks, not back to the level they were previously but even more improved, she was so touched. However, I was only a small part of the process, it really was the student who did the work. I am so proud of her and know she will do very well in her career.
“Diving into my strengths made me feel like I am enough. There is no need for me to look at others and think “I wish I could have done that” or “I wish I did that their way” I am enough and I am great, I do things differently to others but that is ok, because there is only one “me” – I am unique and I can and will do great things, my way.”
Tell us more about your industry experience.
I have approximately 20 years’ experience in the health and fitness industry from overseas and in Australia, working with individuals from all demographics which filled my lust for life. I also hold almost 10 years of teaching experience in a range of topics such as Science, Math’s, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, and many more. I have worked with a wide range of both clients and industry professionals which has given me great exposure to others within my network and current exposure to what is currently happening in the industry. I have studied a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Biomedicine and latterly completed further higher education, being able to once more walk across the stage in my mortar board and gown as a “mature student”. So, I know what you are going through, I understand the challenges of being a student, face to face or online, I have also taught face to face and online so I have many hints and tips and skills I can share with you to enable you to have the smoothest study experience possible.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me means achieving my goals or completing a step which brings me closer to my goals. Life is short, goals are exciting but the steps that are required to be taken to get there can be overwhelming and challenging. That is why I decided to move from being a lecturer to Success Coach, I know what it’s like to have a dream and have large challenges to overcome to get there, I would like to achieve my own dreams and nothing would make me more fulfilled in my role than to know I have been able to assist you too, in achieving your goals.
What advice do you have for a student starting University?
Ask questions, be prepared and use all support tools available. We are here to help you succeed. Mostly, be confident, you CAN DO IT!
Why do you think understanding our innate strengths matters?
Gaining insight as to your strengths is hugely valuable. This assists you in knowing how you “tick” and can often be a reassurance that you can do anything you put your mind to. Often we compare ourselves to others which puts unreasonable demands on ourselves. Knowing how we operate as an individual brings clarity, calmness and focus to what we do and how we can change our futures.
What are your top 5 Strengths? How did learning your strengths help you?
Deep diving into my top 5 really made me feel like I am enough. There is no need for me to look at others and think “I wish I could have done that” or “I wish I did that their way” I am enough and I am great, I do things differently to others but that is ok, because there is only one “me” I am unique and I can and will do great things, my way.
What’s a quote that you really inspires you?
“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere” – Albert Einstein
Without dreams, life would be boring and we would all be the same, have dreams, set goals and go out there and create!! Magic awaits, just around the corner.
